When I went to Hall Farm at Harpswell on Friday evening, I had no intention of actually buying anything. Then I saw your stand and my resolve weakened and I walked away with "Golden Leaf". What a superb photo! I will be back some time soon for "Lincoln Corridor" and "Locked Up". Best wishes and good luck. Rick

I lived in Riggbeck in the late 1970's after returning from India. I lived there again in the early 1980's. The house is never far from my thoughts. I cannot believe it is not there anymore. To me it always will be.

your photo are beuatiful full of spirit
over 20 years ago I spent many hours rambling about this gorgeous part of the country and was fascinated by the purple house but never went inside. I was very sad to hear it had been burnt down.
Do you have anymore details of mrs 'vee' and her 9 children that lived there as I am writing a book about the area. Look forward to seeing more of your work. mags

Hello Jane,

I lived at Rigg Beck from 1985-9 as one of Varya's tenants. Your pictures brought it all back. I had the Mountain View room.

And I remember the bath! One winter the pipes froze so I had to carry buckets of water from the beck. Couldn't afford to heat it either, because the electricity meters were ruinously expensive. Quickest bath I ever had.

Thank you for the photos. It was a beautiful house. It deserved a better fate.

Hey, love the photos of this place, highly evocative. How easy would you say it was to access (and I know it won't be THAT easy).

Thank you for showing the inside of this institution! My grandparents and uncle were incarcerated for 3 years in a Nazi POW camp in Germany during WW2. The confinement caused great mental suffering. When they were released and flown back to the UK, the government gave them a few shillings and sent them on their way. My grandparents & uncle had lost everything to the Nazis when the occupied Jersey. Within a short period of time my grandmother and uncle ended up in the Lincoln Lunatic Asylum as St John's was then called. The health authorities in Lincoln have kept no records of the patients kept there up until 1978 at least, by which time both my grandmother and uncle had died. Therefore I have been able to learn nothing of their many years in that place. All very tragic.

I suppose the county council will sell it off for development into luxury flats, if that process has not already begun?

Sincerely,
David Cade.

P.S. Good photographs, by the way. But more importantly, revealing photographs.

hi, i was in business with stephen hacklan, chairman of wiggins who bought the st johns site in 1994 ish, i started at this point a small agency with wiggins as my main client, watching most haunted on halloween from an asylum in wales reminded me so much of my time in lincoln
i knew the site and inside very well, my office was just on the right from the main entrance the coutyyard was envisioned as a potential restuarant etc, i remember one disturbing area not on your pics, a round room with cells to allow supervision of patients with little privacy with like half doors and if i recall right space where thick glass may have been once, the womans section made me feel sick imagining, one room i saw had a dead animal and pentagram do you recall the round room with tiny cells around it?

Hi,
I came across your website while looking up Rigg Beck House. I know the area very well and have admired that old house for years. I do a lot of artwork and have taken many photos of the place myself. I love some of your more unusual pieces. The variations in subjects and the mix of colours and shapes. Very inspiring.
Regards.
Wendy.

Hello there,

I loved all your photos you took of St. Johns Asylum. How long ago was they taken? And, is it still there? I'm thinking of taking a visit, heard alot about it and going to photograph most of it. From what was in your photos, is all that still there today do you know?

Hope to hear from you soon, thanks.

Sam.

Well - cheers for that one - people will be asking for my autograph. I tried to send you a text the other day (we were in Norfolk) but I don't do texts well so you probably never got it. When do I need to read the joined heads by?

Keep up the good work with taking photos of lookalikes - love from Jude xxxxx

PS - hope you had a good time in the lakes

Jane,
Everyone can take photographs, not everyone can compose, and not everyone can compose with an artistic eye like yours. You amaze me, your talent is so special, keep it up......please!

Your print arrived this morning by registered post, immaculately packed and perfect in every way. Framed, it will hang in my study and will always be in sight.

The puzzle and questions that you pose in the composition are intruiging; the spiders web near the top of the stairs, the torn poster with writing viewed from the back; the cat food in the cupboard and the bin liner tossed dowmthe stairs with its attendant marks in the dust. How on earth did you resist the temptation to go in? If it were me I would have taken a deep breath.......... and probably walked away. Things there are best left undisturbed. Thank you for your creativity. If you ever need a bass player........

*your work just gets better all the time
*I can see exactly why you won the Chairman's Challenge
*already I am missing the direct inspiration, however your work travels well over the water and remains the real source of influence on my thinking and approaches to photography and image creation
*when you come over in the spring do you think we might eventually get this day of photography finally planned and sorted?
*miss the chats. Take care.

There is little doubt in my mind
That these are the greatest photos you'll find,
And I think now I've had a good look
That together we should make a book, Jane

Why didn't I think of that Bill?!

Book will be ready early in the new year, just can't keep up with your poetry, I need to do some to fit your poems so it's not you doing all of the hard work. (tried to do a poem back but as you know I'm better at pics than words)xxxx Jane

What exqusite photograpy. I would like to order a copy of the interior shot and wondered if you had any more. I have never visited the house but have become fascinated by the family that lived there, there are many legends and stories about the Vergauwens.

Hi Ian, thanks for the compliment and interest. I've tried to e-mail you at your home but the messages have been returned. I sent one to the school so hopefully you'll get it eventually, regards, Jane

Dear Jane,
you have some interesting pictures there of the old hospital. It seems a shame that a fine building has come to this. It had a friendly atmosphere when I worked there as a Nursing Assistant on one of the wards several years ago and can still remember the good times which were had by all.Including being invited to the Drs Ball.

Where did you get the coloured glass?

(It was in the house when we bought it!!)

These are really good Jane.
Whats even more spooky is I remember them with patients in !
The images of the Childrens ward are excellent. Its also fascinating to see how your site is developing. Keep it up !

Hi Jane,
You have some fantastic new shots from your St.Johns gallery.
I particularly like "Derelict Corridor" , "Falling Apart" , "Gone" , and the one with the door on the floor with the light shining on it.
Superb!

(Thanks marisa, I look at your site regularly, great to keep in touch, hope you get inspired soon!! :-) Jane)

Hi Jane,
I have been looking forward to visiting your site for ages.....I was not at all disappointed. Some people can capture the world and portray it to others so that they sit up and take notice. You are one of those people, very talented and sensitive.
John Butterfield

Jane, I have now reviewed your portfolio of photographs many times and find them so interesting and imaginative. Congratulations on having such a flair in this field.

I think that your photos are brilliant. So varied, but all with a definite sense of your own vision. Wonderful!
